Case 31: Turnabout Movie

[Kay opens her eyes, apparently having drifted off in a daydream for a minute while she was waiting for Yamamoto to pick her up for their big date. But when she comes to, she isn't on the front porch of her house at all - she's in a car. At a drive-in. With... Lucas? Okay, not so bad, but it's certainly not the steamy date at Makeout Point with her boyfriend that she's been fussing about all week long. She's got her purse with her, but is suddenly wearing the ridiculous 50s fashions of the town instead of her usual skirt and boots.]

"Aw, geez! Seriously, Mayfield? It had to be tonight, of all nights?"

[She sighs, trying to open the car door and getting nowhere fast.]

[Kay smiles sympathetically, patting Lucas on the shoulder.]

"It's okay. I'm sure both our fathers would be proud of us."

Oh. I . . . was thinking about my mom. My dad . . . I think he's still alive.

Oh... well, I'm sure your mom would be proud too.

I was just wondering . . . if it got easier to deal with as more time passed.

Yeah, it gets easier. I haven't forgotten my dad, but I can remember the good times and smile, y'know?

[Lucas nods slowly.]

I hope I can do that someday. It's still hard to think about, though . . .

Well, if you ever want to, you can talk about it to me...

. . . Maybe some other time. It's kind of a really long story.

That's fine. Just so you know that someone's willing to listen, y'know? It helps sometimes just knowing that.

. . . If you ever want to tell me about your dad, I'd like to listen, too.

[Smiles and nods.]

"Thanks. I'll definitely tell you about him sometime."

So the people the Blob eats will come back, right?

"Huh? Oh. Um..."

[Looking evasive now...]

. . . It's just oatmeal . . . Right?

Um... y-yeah! Just oatmeal!

Hm.

[Lucas turns his attention back to the movie and begins to much on the popcorn again. After a few more minutes, he turns back to Kay and blushes.]

Thanks, Kay. I think I'm almost enjoying this . . .

Yeah, it's not so bad. At least nothing weird has happened aside from the whole 'locked in a car' thing, right?

Uh-huh. It's not nearly as bad as I would've thought.

. . .

I wonder when they'll let us out, though.

I dunno. The movie shouldn't have too much longer to go, so maybe when it's over?

I'll wait til the end when everyone comes out to start fidgeting, then.

Oh, um, they usually don't show the people coming out...

. . . Why not? Is it so we can make up the happy ending ourselves?

"...Yeah, that's it! There's a part at the end that's kinda scary, though, so I'll tell you when to close your eyes."

[Kay feels bad about lying, but poor Lucas is so innocent. :(]

I think in my ending, the monster should explode and turn into chocolate pudding and everyone will have chocolate milkshakes. I don't really like oatmeal.
