Case 31: Turnabout Movie

[Kay opens her eyes, apparently having drifted off in a daydream for a minute while she was waiting for Yamamoto to pick her up for their big date.  But when she comes to, she isn't on the front porch of her house at all - she's in a car.  At a drive-in.  With... Lucas?  Okay, not so bad, but it's certainly not the steamy date at Makeout Point with her boyfriend that she's been fussing about all week long.  She's got her purse with her, but is suddenly wearing the ridiculous 50s fashions of the town instead of her usual skirt and boots.]

"Aw, geez!  Seriously, Mayfield?  It had to be tonight, of all nights?"

[She sighs, trying to open the car door and getting nowhere fast.]

"I don't think there's any way out of here."

[Still sort of slumping in her seat, she looks out ahead of them to the movie playing in front of all the parked cars.]

"...I bet we probably have to sit through the movie before we can leave."

[Lucas stops pulling.]

You think that's it? It must be worse than that, right?

[He resumes his efforts a little less vigorously.]

. . . I can't even tell what it's supposed to be.

"Looks like another Blob movie. These were pretty popular in the 50s in America. Monster movies and stuff like that."

[Tugs on the door handle again, even though she knows it's futile.]

"...And it might not be any worse than that. I mean, sometimes Mayfield doesn't hurt or kill us, y'know? Like Mother's Day and Father's Day."

. . . People still got hurt, though.

[Lucas leans back in his seat and kicks at the windshield.]

Do you think . . . Do you think those people might show up? The ones with the axes and the gas?

"Well, yeah, but that happened because of what other people did... not really the town."

[Kay sighs, reaching over to pat Lucas on the shoulder.]

"Don't worry. I don't think the hazmat guys are coming this time. It just doesn't feel like that kind of thing this time around..."

. . . [He begins to calm down a little at the touch.]

I still don't like the idea of being stuck in here. But if you don't think so . . .

"I don't like it any more than you do, but if I know Mayfield, we're not getting out until they decide to let us out. So I guess we might as well just try to enjoy the movie until then, right?"

[Smiles reassuringly, handing over some popcorn.]

[Lucas squirms for a few more moments before sitting upright in his chair and trying a brief smile.]

. . . OK. I guess you're right.

[He hesitantly takes a handful of popcorn and discovers that it is, to his surprise, delicious.]

What's, um. Happened so far?

Eh, nothing much. Happy American town, nothing will ever go wrong here, blah blah blah. I think there was something about a meteor hitting in the middle of a field somewhere? The setup for these movies is usually pretty lame. There'll be a blob eating people pretty soon, though. Just watch.

[Munch munch munch munch hey are those milkshakes.]

[Shrugs.]

"Beats me. That's what this movie's about, though. A big blob monster that eats people. It starts out little, though. It's just kind of like... um... a ball of slime that oozes around, I guess?"

. . . Is that it right now? It looks like oatmeal.

[Laughs.]

"It probably is oatmeal. Special effects kinda sucked back then. But don't worry, it gets bigger and scarier. Wait'll people come to check it out."

"Honestly, it's not very scary at all. You should be fine."

[Grabs some more popcorn and takes a sip of soda.]

Um, Kay . . . Why do you think they're doing this? There doesn't seem to be any point . . .

Beats me. Maybe they're just trying to mess with us this time.

Well, it's kind of awkward, I guess. I mean... a lot of people probably got separated from their boyfriends and girlfriends, y'know? Or maybe paired up with someone who hates them?

"Yeah, that coulda been pretty awkward, huh!"

[Kay opens her purse, digging around for a chocolate bar she's sure she had in there. And OH, SPEAKING OF AWKWARD - the box of condoms she got from Ema Skye falls out of there and onto the seat between them. Kay looks horrified.]

[Kay being horrified as she is, Lucas quickly reaches for the box to hand it back. He frowns a little at the taglines.]

Why would you want to feel like you're wearing nothing?

"N-no, it's okay! You don't need to see those!"

[Lucas hangs on a little longer.]

Is it candy? I like mints . . . But not wearing anything still sounds strange.

[Kay hangs her head and completely avoids eye contact, blushing like CRAZY.]

"U-um... can I just have those back..."

[Holds out her hand awkwardly.]
